Here is a guide to making sure that you get the most out of your Open Day visits:
- Get information booklets on courses, the university, the campus, units, scholarships and grants, etc.
- Make sure you allow plenty of time to visit. Open Days attract a lot of people and there are so many events going on that you might like to participate in some of the activities apart from getting info on the courses you’re interested in.
- Speak to people- prospective students like yourself, current students and staff
- Find out about transport to the campus and parking when you get there (if you need it). Find out about shuttle buses and the facilities available to you in close proximity to the campus.
- Take a campus tour – it’s bound to be much bigger than your former high school, so this is a great chance to find your way around before the semester starts.
- Find out about bridging and support programs available to you should you require them. This might even give you a head start with the workload and content so when you start uni, you’ll hit the ground running.
- If the course you’re interested in has any other entry criteria besides the ATAR rank, like an interview or portfolio, ask advice on how to present information or prepare for the interview. You can even find out what to expect from current students who followed the same application process.
- Start your visits in Year 10! With so many institutions and the stress that will come with HSC, you might find yourself starved for time later on and might not get to see all the universities you’d hoped.
Try to get involved in as much as possible during Open Day and don’t keep to yourself. Being in such a new environment may seem a little daunting but smile and talk to people – you’ll find most are in the same boat as you and others are more than willing to help you out!
