Life At Uni

Practical Tips on Starting

Welcome to university – one of the most exciting, new experiences you will encounter! If you’ve attended Orientation Week (also knownas O-Week), you will have been introduced to the campus and the way things are run. You might have some questions about what your first day will be like, so here is just about everything you need to know.

CAMPUS

University is a huge environment and with so many facilities, it can feel like a little town of its own. You’ll probably find stores, cafes, newsagencies and plenty of places to hang out outside of study hours, so it might be a little difficult to find your way around on the first day. Go to the university’s website and download a campus map, or alternatively, you may be able to grab one at one of the information booths during Orientation Week. It’s always something handy to keep track of where you’re going, and to even find out what new places you can discover on campus.

TEXTBOOKS

At uni, you will need to purchase your textbooks and each unit will require their own. You’ll soon find that these can prove very pricey if you buy them new, but you can also get second hand books in excellent condition. During the first weeks of every semester, you’ll find notice boards are filled with students advertising their sale of books so write down a few numbers and you’ll get your books at a fraction of the price.

WHAT TO WEAR

There is no right or wrong here, so make sure you’re comfortable. You’ll fit in even if you wear your trackie pants because most people do! If you’re going to do practical units, make sure you check the unit outlines online to see if they specify closed toe footwear for your safety. It’s also a good idea to keep a jacket or cardigan with you at all times, even if it’s a really hot day because lecture halls can get very chilly, especially if you are in there for more than an hour!

WHAT TO BRING

Always make sure you’ve got your student ID on you because this can be used to borrow books and other resources from the library and pay for printing and photocopying. You might even get a student discount from shops on or near campus so it’s always a bonus to keep it handy. It’s also great to keep a few nibblies in your bag and some water to stay hydrated throughout the day.

STATIONERY

It’s up to you how you keep organised. Bring some loose leaf paper, a book or a folder to write your notes or organise them as you see fit. Everyone will have something different, so don’t worry. Just make sure you have something to write on and with.
