How to write a great essay

Most people see an essay as a steep mountain and writing it, an impossible climb to the top; but it doesn’t have to be that way! The secret to writing a great one is in the structure, and while there is no perfect way to write an essay, here is a simple and effective way to do a great job and score high marks. In high school, you’ll generally be asked to write essays 1000-2000 words in length. You don’t have to be a genius; just follow the easy formula and remember the number 3.

Every essay has three standard parts: the introduction, body (or argument) and conclusion.

The first section (introduction) also has three parts:

  1. There is a general statement: One sentence making a general comment about the topic/subject of the question
  2. Rewording of the question: In a sentence or two, expand on what the essay question is asking you to focus on.
  3. Present argument: In a sentence or two, write what your point of view is and what points you’ll be discussing in the body. These will help you support your argument.

You will then move on to the body where you will require two or three paragraphs for each of your points depending on the word length of your essay. You can apply this easy structure to each body paragraph, too.

Topic sentence: The first sentence will introduce the topic and deliver the argument. You will then use the ‘Technique, Example, Effect’ (TEE) rule to support this first topic sentence. Include a technique that backs up your argument, an example where the technique is used and what the effect of the technique is. Your last sentence will link back to the essay question (answering the essay question). Do this for each of your body paragraphs and you can’t go wrong!

The last step is the conclusion. There is no new information included here; you are just reinforcing the argument you have presented throughout the body paragraphs. Again, all you have to do is follow three easy steps: In a sentenceor two, restate what your point of view/argument is in respect to the essay question. In a couple of sentences, state the points you have used to support this argument. And thirdly, conclude with a couple of sentences that state why your points and argument answer the essay question.

Writing an essay is as simple as one, two, three!
