Choosing subjects for Year 11 and 12 can be a big deal, especially because just about everyone you talk to will have different things to say. Your parents will have expectations, your friends might put pressure on you to do similar subjects to them, your teachers might want you to pick the course they are taking and you might be confused by it all. Keeping in mind these tips will help you to make the right choice and get the most out of what the HSC has to offer:
- Choose subjects that reflect your natural strengths and abilities. If you have an aptitude for solving mathematical equations, this will give you an edge if you pick Maths.
- At the same time, pick subjects that interest you. There is nothing worse than being bored in class for two years because this will impact your results. Choose something that will be challenging and sustain your interest throughout the course.
- Don’t go by scaling. Don’t choose 3-unit maths just because you think it’ll give you a high scaling – this will only happen if you actually do well. Choose subjects you know you’ll excel in no matter the scaling because doing well means that the scaling won’t bring you down.
- Don’t be swayed by friends. Don’t worry if your friends aren’t doing the same subjects as you. This will give you a chance to talk to new people and it will surely make for great conversation when you do catch up with them at recess orlunch.
- Think about the further study and what kind of subjects will help you or even give you an insight into a potential career. But don’t think too hard. You might change your mind about what you want to do by the time you finish high school and this is completely fine. Most tertiary courses don’t have prerequisites but even if they do, there are many short bridging courses you can do over the summer.
- Strike a balance between theory and practical. Everyone needs a creative outlet but theory subjects generally give you better skills if you are thinking of continuing with tertiary education, unless you are doing a trade. Plus, most practical subjects have the really high demands of major projects and dealing with just one can be quite stressful, let alone more! Make your life easier and stick to a maximum of one major project.
- Pick what you want, not what your parents, older siblings, other family members or friends recommend. At the end of theday, this is your life and you will be the one doing the assessments and sitting the exams.
The wide range of subjects offered during the HSC are intended to give you the chance to explore your interests and maximise your abilities – choose what you love and enjoy your last years of high school.
